Captain Marvel Trailer Will Be Coming Soon - But When?

The marketing push for Captain Marvel is about to begin, meaning it can't be long until Marvel releases the first teaser trailer. But just when should we expect it?
The wait between Ant-Man & the Wasp and Captain Marvel is a long one - the biggest gap between two Marvel Studios movies in years. Even accounting for that, though, Marvel's relative silence on their next blockbuster is unusual. The closest comparison is with Black Panther; Marvel released the first trailer on June 9, 2017, ahead of a February 2018 release, so we've already passed that window for Captain Marvel. It seems to be something of a conscious decision on Marvel's part, allowing audiences as much time as possible to let the impact of Avengers: Infinity War sink in.

This week, however, Brie Larson has taken to social media to confirm that the marketing for Captain Marvel is about to begin. In a tweet addressed to Entertainment Weekly, she quipped that she was bored and wondered whether or not they wanted "to break the Internet." She received a quick response in which EW promised something "marvel-ous." Should we expect an imminent trailer - or will there still be a wait?

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

Don't expect the trailer to drop in response to those tweets. Marvel's marketing usually kicks off with a first image from the film, and EW has often been the publication to get the scoop. In the case of Captain Marvel, an image is a big deal; so far we've only had a handful of set photos, and none of them have shown Brie Larson wearing Carol Danvers's iconic costume. We know she'll don it over the course of the film, as she was wearing red-and-black in concept art released for Captain Marvel at SDCC last year, and Avengers 4 artwork has also shown her wearing it. Recently-announced merchandise has also shown the traditional colorscheme. We haven't had any official photos, but hopefully that's about to change.

Larson's comment about "breaking the Internet" does hint that there may be more, though. It's likely that EW has some behind-the-scenes exclusives under embargo, set to drop with this first image. Another possibility is that the image drop will be accompanied by an announcement of a trailer release date; that would certainly get the online response Larson is hoping for.

THE TRAILER WILL BE OUT SOON

One thing's for certain: with the marketing for Captain Marvel finally beginning, we won't have long to wait for the trailer drop. It could potentially even be this week, but there'll probably still be something of a wait. To use the example of Thor: Ragnarok, the first trailer released two weeks after the first-look photos.
There's one other complication here - which films should the trailer drop be paired with? There's no obvious candidate, but the most likely is Sony's Venom. That film hits theaters on October 5, and recent reports have suggested Sony isn't going to pursue an R-rating after all, significantly increasing the odds that it could be accompanied by a Captain Marvel trailer. Another possibility is First Man; although that's not another superhero movie, it shares thematic links with the comic book character of Captain Marvel, ranging from military service to space exploration. In both these scenarios, we should expect the trailer to hit the Internet towards the end of September.
