Believe it or not, Avengers: Infinity War co-star Idris Elba doesn’t know that MCU stands for Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Known for his roles in Pacific Rim, Luther and The Wire, Elba portrayed the Asgardian Heimdall in the MCU’s three Thor films before falling to Thanos and his Black Order in Infinity War. However, with the arrivial of Avengers 4next year, there’s still chance Elba could return to the blockbuster franchise … whose name he may or may not know.
While speaking with Yahoo Movies UK about his directorial debut with Yardie, the MCU was mentioned in passing. “What’s MCU?” asked Elba before he was informed it means Marvel Cinematic Universe. Laughing it off, the actor confessed, “Oh right, I have never heard that before! I thought it was Manchester United … but don’t worry about it.”
Terms like MCU and DCEU (DC Extended Universe, used in reference to Warner Bros.’ superhero films) are pretty commonplace, but Elba’s comment suggests he might not be as invested in the world’s highest-grossing franchise as actors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and his Thor co-star Chris Hemsworth. Between juggling all those James Bond rumors and being a DJ on the side, playing Heimdall is apparently just a small part of Elba’s lifestyle.
Considering Heimdall was killed off before Thanos’ finger snap he could be one of those permanent MCU deaths that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has been promising.
Elba has previously told Metro UK he has no idea if he’ll return of the MCU. That being said, the actor has had a relatively minor roleas Thor’s ally and maybe he doesn’t keep up with all the latest MCU news.
