First Photo of Pennywise in IT Chapter 2 on Set Confirms Iconic Scene

Pennywise the Clown perches atop a statue of Paul Bunyan in a new set photo from IT Chapter Two, possibly confirming the inclusion of an iconic moment from the book. Set 27 years after the events of 2017’s blockbuster horror film IT, the sequel picks up the story of the Losers Club as they are once again called to do battle with an ancient evil who takes the form of a menacing clown.
Based on Stephen King’s massive 1986 novel of the same name, IT mined ‘80s nostalgia while providing modern-style jump scares, and it went on to gross $700 million at the global box office. Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, and more join the cast of the IT sequel to the play the grown-up versions of the original movie’s adolescent heroes. Unfortunately, for the grown-up Losers, the evil Pennywise wasn't vanquished in the first movie, and now they must return to the haunted town of Derry to finally put an end to the clown’s reign of terror. In addition to the grown-up Losers, the movie will also include flashbacks to the kids.
In a new photo from the set of IT Chapter Two (viaNorthumberland News), Pennywise the Clown himself can be seen perched on the shoulder of a Paul Bunyan statue, a moment that will resonate with fans of the book. In the original novel, Richie Tozier encounters Pennywise at the statue outside Derry. Not content with scaring Richie in his clown form, Pennywise takes over the body of the Paul Bunyan statue and attacks the boy. The shot of Bill SkarsgĆ„rd as Pennywise perched on Bunyan’s shoulder seems to confirm that the sequel will include some version of the scene of the statue coming to life and menacing Richie. See the image below:

The Bunyan statue did appear in the first IT movie, but was only glimpsed in the background of shots. The statue seen in the above image is a temporary one that was erected in the town of Port Hope, Ontario, where IT Chapter Two is currently shooting (the first movie shot there as well). Of course, the real Paul Bunyan statue that inspired the scene in King’s book stands in Bangor, Maine, and has become a popular stop-off for King fans seeking out the real-life locations that have fueled the novelist's horrifying imagination over the decades.
It's important to bear in mind that, just because we see the shot of Pennywise perched on the clown, it’s always possible that director Andy Muschietti won’t go all the way with Pennywise possessing the statue and only shot a scene that nods at the moment from the book. A lot of very weird things happen in King's novel, and Muschietti will have to pick and choose which of those moments to include in It Chapter Two.
