When The Trailers For Marvel's Upcoming Movies Will Release

When will the trailers for the next Marvel movies - Captain MarvelAvengers 4 and Spider-Man: Far From Home - release? For the first time in years, Marvel currently doesn't have an upcoming movie it's actively pushing: following Ant-Man & the Wasp, there's an eight-month gap between MCU releases, and none to come have a trailer yet.
That's obviously a conscious decision to allow the impact of Avengers: Infinity War and it's shocking ending die down (that's why Marvel Studios didn't have a panel at Comic-Con 2018), but now it's out on Blu-ray and Ant-Man 2's theatrical run is wrapping up, all eyes are the future.
It's easy to get overexcited about the prospect of new trailers and expect them sooner than they're ever going to release. What's the truth? Well, using Marvel's traditional release methods, we can make educated guesses for when our first looks at Carol Danvers, the post-snap Earth Mightiest Heroes and a returning Spidey will come.

CAPTAIN MARVEL - MID-TO-LATE SEPTEMBER

The next MCU movie is Captain Marvel, and with a little over six months until its March 6 release date, a trailer is well due. Black Panther, which released in mid-February, had its first teaser released in June of the previous year, a massive eight months ahead of its debut. Of course, Marvel is just coming off a massive summer, so waiting to give audience's their first proper look at Brie Larson as Carol Danvers makes sense.

Now, though, the trailer must be close. Kevin Feige said back in June that it was "a few months away", which brings us to right around now; in theory, the Captain Marvel trailer could arrive any day. However, there aren't many films to pair a first look with - September's big tentpole release is The Predator, whose R-rating isn't ideal for the PG-13 MCU movie - meaning the next obvious pick being Venom in early October. That would mean a late-September trailer release is most likely, although Marvel could go a little earlier.

AVENGERS 4 - LATE NOVEMBER

Marvel owns the first May weekend release slot and has marketing down to pat, which tells us a lot about when to expect Avengers 4's trailer. The last three films on that weekend - Avengers: Infinity WarGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2Captain America: Civil War (Infinity War was a week earlier to preserve spoilers, but it's close enough) - all had their teaser release in a similar time period: the final week of November/first week of December (Guardians 2 had a pre-tease in October, but that felt very much like a one-off). Thus, an Avengers 4trailer is likely to drop around Thanksgiving.

It's possible that, with Avengers 4 being the grand culmination of everything in the MCU so far (and that aspect having been somewhat spent by Infinity War's "once and for all" marketing), Marvel may want to start pushing it a little earlier. Avengers: Age of Ultron's trailer released in late October ahead of the May release, which was also trying to up the ante, so we could see it earlier. That said, with Ant-Man & the Wasp arriving on Blu-ray that month and the hype machine for Avengers 4 tight so far, it's expected they'll go with the same.

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME - DECEMBER

Whereas Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 appear to have moderately late starts to their marketing, with a trailer arriving six months before their respective releases, don't expect the same restraint from Spider-Man: Far From Home. Although it's in the MCU, the Spidey sequel is a Sony production, meaning they ultimately define the marketing; it will follow their gameplan, rather than Marvel's.

Spider-Man: Homecoming's teaser released in early December ahead of its July release, just a week after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's trailer. Even with the big question over Peter Parker's fate after his death in Avengers: Infinity War, it would be unexpected for Sony to hold back. The Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer seems a fair bet for December (likely paired with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse).
