Henry Cavill to Star in Netflix’s The Witcher Series

As if in response to recent fan art, Justice League star Henry Cavill has been cast in the title role of Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher.
Less than a month after the Mission: Impossible — Fallout actor teased he’d like to play Geralt of Rivia in the streaming service’s fantasy adaptation, the fan casting has come true. The Witcher has been granted an eight-episode straight-to-series order.
Based on the series of eight fantasy novels and short-story collections written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher centers on Geralt, one of the group of monster hunters known as “witchers,” who develop supernatural abilities to battle deadly creatures.
Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Netflix’s Daredevil, The Defenders and The Umbrella Academy) commented on Cavill’s hiring this morning, tweeting, “He was my first meeting. I didn’t have writers or scripts yet – just a greenlight and a lot of passion. That was four months ago, and I’ve never forgotten the passion he brought. He IS Geralt. He always has been. I’m so thrilled to welcome HENRY CAVILL to the Witcher family.”
That suggests Cavill was playing a little coy in a promotional interview for Fallout, when he expressed his fondness for The Witcher 3 video game, and his love for the source material. “Have you read the books? The books are amazing,” he said. “The books I started reading and they are well worth the read. They’re really, really good.”
The Witcher is expected to arrive on Netflix sometime in 2019.
